<hi style=afpcap>The first fighter aircraft to see action with the American Expeditionary Force in France during the First World War was the Nieuport 28 with almost 300 examples being purchased direct from the manufacturer. Amongst the units which flew the type were the famed 94th and 95th Pursuit Squadrons. The first aerial victories scored in Nieuports were achieved on 14 April 1918, with 1st Lt Douglas Campbell becoming the first ace while flying the type.</hi>
